Attended Amkor Seminar today. Flip chip -- lot of hot air. Worldwide BGA volume is finally taking off. Project at least 70% increase in volume over last year. The substrate supply have been esolved(increased to 15 from 5 last year). This will be the package of choice for pin count between 210 and 500.

Anam is going to purchase KLIC 8020 but do not know the number. Will be offering 70 micron pad pitch as a standard next year. Need 8020. Each product managers will be making the decision. Talked about automation with Esec bonder/KLIC and mold system. They are talking about module. Again, more business opportunity for KLIC.

microBGA -- No real volume at this time. I talked to one engineering
manager from flash product. Still at developmental stage. The package cost of microBGA is 5 cents/ball(lead) versus .8 cents/standard wirebonded package. Only Intel has microBGA package but no one can actual get hold of units. Distributor do not have them. AMD is still working on them. Anam think that it will only serve cellular market(size is very important) until the infrastructure develops.

Wirebond will rule for a long time. Just stay cool and we will be okay by mid 1998. Meanwhile, I will keep my Dell and Compaq put along with my Quantum short/put.

Donald, Mike and other KLIC longs

I think we all are Lemmings for considering KLIC, SFAM, CYMI should continue to hit new highs without any risk.

Well, we were completely wrong. KLIC is off 55% of its high, CYMI is 60%(??) off its high and SFAM is 50% off its high.

I do not know enough about SFAM and CYMI to make any bold statement but I think there is no safer high tech stocks to invest other than KLIC at this price. I think market cannot differentiate between Fab and assembly market. There is no real competition and it will completely dominate the market for next two or three years.

IMHO, there will be slow down in the fab spending(CYMI, SFAM will be impacted) by DRAM mfg next few quarters in assess the damage but the assembly and test will continue to grow to meet the BGA and units growth requirement.

And today Amkor(world's largest assembly subcon) seminar confirmed my belief that flipchip and microBGA is a marketing tool rather than actual product. Flipchip and microBGA is/will be used for hand held product and it will be a niche for years to come. 5 cents a pin(micro BGA_ versus .8 cents/pin. Who is going to convert? Now, knowing the actual number, I do not even think DRAM guys will convert except small portion that goes into a palm size computer.

I think I will do dollar cost averaging on my April $35 option. Pick up additional 10 Apr. $35 calls for every 2 dollar KLIC goes down. What you guys think???? It should be minimum $50 stock by next summer, right???
