Hitachi confirms delay of Texas fab

IRVING, Tex. -- Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. confirmed it will
delay for one year the addition of a sub-half micron wafer processing line to
its chip plant here.

The fab already has an 0.8-micron line, which is producing Hitachi's HH
series 8-bit and 16-bit microcontrollers, DRAM and SRAM chips, with a
total monthly production of about 3 million units. Originally Hitachi planned
to start ramping up the new line in March 1998, but this is now postponed
for a year, said a company spokeswoman today.

The Japanese firm attributed the delay to a 7% cutback in its capital
equipment investment for the remainder of Hitachi's fiscal year ending March
31, 1998. The capital spending reduction was made after revenue and
income has fallen in the global price nose dive of DRAMs, the predominate
type of semiconductor for Hitachi.

Hitachi also produces DRAMs in a joint venture with Texas Instruments
Inc., called Twinstar Semiconductor, located in Richardson, Tex. That
operation is not affected by the latest Hitachi capital spending cutback, the
spokeswoman said.
