NSCP has updated Communicator. Java improved, well sort of. I updated and found it MUCH faster. But then I upgraded to 32m of EDO from 24m of non-EDO so yes, I know the memory upgrade is what made my machine mean! Communicator was locking up fairly often when I accessed Java but is now really screaming with the 32m of EDO.

If you're sick of staring at "Starting Java"
messages while waiting for an applet to load,
you're in luck. While Communicator's actual Java
execution speed remained unchanged in our
tests, applet initialization in the newest release is
considerably faster than in 4.03. Since most
applets are fairly simple these days, initialization is
often the biggest reason that Java seems to run so
slowly. Our tests produced somewhat scattered
results, with applets loading anywhere from 20
percent to 90 percent faster in 4.04, with most
applets improving by 20 percent to 30 percent.
