Hawaiian Electric uses 100 percent biofuel in test

HONOLULU

Hawaiian Electric Co. is reporting that it successfully used 100 percent biofuel in a full-scale test involving a steam turbine generator that normally uses petroleum.

Company Executive Vice President Robbie Alm said in a statement Friday that it was the first time a utility-scale steam unit had burned 100 percent biofuel at 100 percent of its generating capacity -- 90 megawatts.

Alm says the test at the company's generating station at Kahe confirms that biofuels can be an important part of Hawaii's clean energy future, along with other renewable sources.

The test, using crude palm oil and an inedible byproduct of palm oil refining, released less nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides than low-sulfur fuel oil.

The utility is a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc.
