I traveled far and wide from 1988-2007 on most of the continents, and had the same experience. I can't recall a single blatantly anti-American incident anywhere in 30+ countries I visited.

Me too. Even if people disliked our government, they were still friendly, for the most part.

In general, I have been well received as an American when traveling abroad.

The exception was in Munich, in 1986. I encountered a number of people who were openly hostile to me. One mocked my attempts to communicate in German, saying angrily, "Why should you have to speak German? This is an occupied country!"

Seeing the behavior of sone of the American servicemen, who seemed to be everywhere, I could well understand the hostility.
