I'm presently using a three tiered strategy. First tier is a skim of the new books section at Barnes and Nobles. Well, new history books, new biographies, new mysteries, new photography books and so on. Second tier: I place the ones that seem interesting on hold at my local library, which connects me to the county wide public library system. So there's a reasonably good chance one or more library will have it. And a reasonably good chance I can get it within a couple of months.

Then, third tier, if, with nonfiction, the book looks particularly compelling I will buy it online via Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, whatever. That's particularly true with investment books, history, and a few current affairs books. Ones I want to have available after I've read them.

The only time I've bought fiction books in recent times were the Swedish mystery books. Too much demand for the library copies. And I wanted to read those when I wanted to read them. As did my wife.
