Egypt was an oil exporter up till 2009 when it became a net importer of oil, although a small one, according to the US Dept of Energy.

Ironically enough, for years Egypt exported oil at the low prices of $30/bbl. Now, it has to import oil at prices of $80, $90, $100/bbl.

Britain experienced this same conversion from oil exporter to importer in 2005 or 2006. Maybe this is part of the explanation of why they reacted so violently several months ago to the increase in University tuition?
