lighter and harder than lead. Also the copper is more expensive (not ridiculously so like gold, but maybe 4 times as pricey as lead)

I'm not sure how much the "less hard" means when dealing with shot rather than bullets. It is important for many bullets. I don't know much about the details of terminal ballistics of shot. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I could address that point.

A lot of solutions will sort of work, some will work decently, but there is some downside from the alternatives. There is a reason why lead has been used, and why those who use it have fought against requirements for alternatives. Lead just works really well for shot or ordinary bullets.

I do understand that there are alternatives that work better than the original non-lead shot (steel pellets) but its not a simple no-brainer to replace all the lead shot, there are still some issues with the alternatives.

Not compared to lead - but there is/has been lead with both a copper or nickel plate or wash - it was found to be quite good. The only issue is copper can corrode over time - in bullets you can see the corrosion and toss out bad ammo, shot shells is a bit more difficult to determine beforehand.

When it comes to bullets - lead obturates to the bore diameter making a good gas seal. No other material does that without raising pressures to unsafe levels.

Some copper solids exist, but those are for specific "dangerous game" purposes and of course some gun banner types would label them "cop killer" bullets because a solid could penetrate a vest more easily. Don't see a lot of tungsten bullets anymore because of that.
