The enormous weight of this ice caused the surface of the Earth's crust to deform and warp downward Interesting - the city dump down the road from me covered the open pits with fill dirt a decade back and now use it as a transfer station for garbage. About a month ago they brought in a lot of sand and built a pile over 30 feet high covering a large football field size area. They placed markers in the ground with numbers in feet - their plan is to compress the ground at least six feet and then move the sand over until they've done the entire old open pit areas.
