It's simple why we support dictators etc.: when the foreign gov't is pro-US multinational corp, we back them up 100%. The more authoritarian, the greater the likely profits thanks to long term stability. And we sell 'em heavy artillery. And later if it all goes sour, we build up our own military to nullify the terrible threat which has suddenly appeared which nobody could have predicted.

Except for the ordinary American citizens and the citizens of the country to be milked, we're all winners.

and asking why we are on the side of guys like Mubarak in the first place

Middle East Stability = security for our oil suppliers

Democracy in the ME = election of people who don't like us because we propped up the dictators for decades

Bottom line is that the US is no longer a shining light and beacon to the world. We don't live by our ideals, if we ever really did. Our leaders are morally bankrupt and our economy is a ponzi scheme. If Obama had any balls at all, he'd throw all caution to the wind and tell the Egyptian people that we support them, even if they elect the Muslim Brotherhood to power and he'd stop funding Mubharak's military immediately and tell the people that as soon as they elect their leaders, he'll fund them the equivalent amount to help shore up their new government.

But it's asking too much of the US to support Democracy in the Middle East. We're no longer believe in Democracy ourselves, as evidenced by the oligarchy of banksters than run this country. We're nothing more than a fascist country with "elected" leaders who pay homage to Wall Street banks and allow the central economic planning committee run by Bernanke to redistribute wealth from citizens to the richest 1% among us.
