They used to have an interesting substitute - the "zaibatsu" paternalistic corporation. That has softened in the face of the economic tough times. Used to be, getting a job in a zaibatsu was tenure for life, and it was more than just a job. It had mildly feudal overtones. Iirc the abolition of that system was huge in the eyes of Japanese workers.
So to answer your question - no, not really. I do not know, for example, what unemployment benefits, both money and healthcare, are like in Japan.
