The intended purpose of a ban is pretty obvious. So is the fact that it wouldn't work.

Those that say adding gasoline to a fire will extinguish it will have a difficult time convincing others of that

Guns are controlled by people, they shoot what they are aimed at. In a violent confrontation they are as much fire fighting foam as they are gasoline. And the "foam" part is responsible people with guns, who are more likely to be disarmed by a ban. The "gasoline" part is the criminals with guns, many of whom will violate the law and have guns anyway, just like the violate many other laws.
