It's amusing to think that people would believe that.

It seems more credible for the 17th century (ok, 18th also), but after checking out Victor Davis Hanson's website, it's even more appropriate for the time of the Peloponnesian War

Cannot agree. This criminal abuse by politicians didn't begin in 1980 - it started much earlier, at least in the 60's.

On other points, Hanson is generally right - including on wealth creation. Once upon a time we see a lucky young genius who will found Facebook, or something like that... but most wealth most of the time is created the old fashioned way, and we all know what that means.
