No, it doesn't work LL. The monthly $2.99 is not for data, it's for voice guidance. MotionX apps take real time map data from the Internet and your location from the GPS and combine them. There is a buffer so if you breifly lose your 3G connection it still works for a while.

With Navigon or Tom Tom or similar apps you actually have the entire database of virtually ever road and street in the US on your phone... amazing when you think about it. But it eliminates the need for an Internet connection and you seldom lose a GPS signal so good to go. I know Navigon has regional maps for cheaper.... maybe that would work?

The NavigonMyregion I think is $29.95 each cover 1/3 of the country.
