Steve,

Despite what Creative Labs might claim, the SB 16 and AWE 32 are not full duplex sound cards. They were designed before Iphone caught on and everyone went out looking for such cards (including me). But to not lose business, Creative rewrote the drivers to achieve full duplex with certain constraints, even though this solution often caused system instability. In fact, Microsoft Netmeeting (excellent choice for anyone getting started in internet voice) recognizes that the SB drivers are full of it and announces that it has set default to half duplex to prevent your system from crashing.

Most of the competing sound cards are now full duplex, including Crystal(ie Acer, classic Gravis), AMD (Gravis PnP), ESS, and I think but am not sure Yamaha too. I think AWE 64 might be true full duplex, also not sure about that.

BTW... while on sound cards, I was wondering if anyone has heard of the folowing incompatibility. Crystal cs4232 based sound cards when placed in ABIT motherboard (SM5 and PX5) cause blank screen (no bootup at all). In Octek Rhino 12, the same cards cause ctrl alt del to go to blank screen and not boot up, although power on and reset both cause it to boot ok. Anyone have any idea what might be going on?
