Ted, I don't have a link to one of your posts mentioning it, but I do remember the question being asked, especially as the violence got really bad in Iraq and Afghanistan: Were they ready for freedom?

Afghanistan was revenge nonsense. We weren't talking about setting up a democracy in that country but rather we were going to find bin Laden and hang him from his gonads.

Iraq was a forced democratization. Its very difficult for a democracy to work when its imposed on a people......usually the need/wanting of it must come from within. That's what is making the push for democracy so powerful in Egypt. That's what I was saying at the time of Iraq....I wanted it to come from within not artificially imposed by the US.

Same question is being asked about the Egyptians. Some are answering it, of course, with the usual "Hate America" rhetoric:

fogcityjournal.com;

What is wrong with you? Seriously, hate America? Must you mouth winger slogans? Are you not educated enough to come up with something a little more original? Fuck!

In fact, the author is upset because he sees the country that he loves going down the shitter. And he's right. Our two party system is badly corrupted and so partisan and entrenched that nothing gets done. We are losing our edge on so many economic levels its pathetic. We had a president who pissed away trillions on stupid wars that accomplished little and helped drain the Treasury. We have a defense department that soaks up many billions of needed tax monies when we have no real enemies in the world. Due to gov't indifference, a housing debacle occurred that all but destroyed housing and its related industries. We have an electorate that is poorly educated, unaware and suffering from serious apathetic....meanwhile the country is lucky to get a 50% turnout of REGISTERED voters during major elections. We are losing whole cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Syracuse, Toledo, Dayton etc......the list goes on and on.......to apathy, decadence and decline. And we have roughly 30% of the population who no longer believes in science and innovation.

In other words, dude, the 'Roman' empire is in decline. And all you can say is this guy is an America hater........because such a development upsets him. Really?

I can't even begin to understand how you can come to that conclusion.

Now I don't know how we are denying the Egyptians their freedom, but I can imagine how you might think we are.

By supporting Mubarak with $2 billion worth of military aid each year, we helped to maintain the status quo and keep him in power all while he was terrorizing the shit out of his people. Why do you have such trouble drawing a line between such relationships?

Personally, I think Obama's best bet is to stay out of the way and pray for a peaceful resolution to everything that's going on in Egypt.

Once again, the dude has been handed a very and dangerous difficult mess to wend his way through. Fortunately, he is brilliant and a quick study and may be able to pull it off.
