The main reason I say little about the cost of the US continuing to increase CO2 emissions is that this cost is unknown. Changes in world emissions would be a more important factor, but US policy doesn't control other countries, and even changes in world emissions have an unknown net effect. To know what the potential cost and harm of higher CO2 levels would be we need to know how much higher, over what time frame, how the feedback loops work, and what other factors independent of CO2 are going to do, and generally we would have to have a better understanding of the Earth's climate.
