Market share affects restaurants just like any other business and they are particularly susceptible to recessions. Grocery stores have much less risk.

Yes, most restaurants don't make it. The ones that do probably combine at least a few standout menu items, a decent location, and excellent money management skills. Managing cash flow is critical in the restaurant business.

As for Michelle Obama, I happen to like that she's making a cause out of obesity so you may be talking to the wrong person with me. Obesity is steadily increasing as we all can observe and it puts a hidden tax on everyone in the form of increased medical costs and lost productivity in the work place. There's a real and measurable financial cost to the country.

I hadn't read that she asked the restaurant industry to reduce portion sizes. Do you have a link?
