I think the ultimate cost experience for me was my first SR50 Texas Instruments calculator. I enrolled in grad school after graduation and found I simply did not have the time to look up logarithms for engineering calculations. I think the thing was like $400 - or something ridiculous. At that time of life that expenditure hurt!

And then there was the cost of our first video camera with the birth of our daughter.
