I use VLC (Videolan) as well - great app. What is neat about it, is that you can "RIGHT-CLICK" say your DVD drive letter and "Play with VLC media player" to force it. For me I never play DVDs I typically rip them into ISO format. But again with VLC you can either RIGHT-CLICK "PLAY WITH" or just drag-drop onto VLC - plays DVD's; DVD "folders" or ISOs.

Though WMV play okay I prefer WMP.

However a number of lovely features with VLC include:
~ Ability to FIX the brightness/contrast (never understood why WMP allows you to change these but always resets with each new iteration)
~ Ability to FIX the initial volume
~ Ability to make really small and ON TOP - combo with changing the size and hitting CTRL-H
~ Ability to move current marker with keyboard - SHIFT-LEFT LEFT/RIGHT for small movement; ALT LEFT/RIGHT for larger movement. Great for a quickie "go back" or "jump forward" without having to use the mouse.
~ Ability for multiple iterations - ie play two or more movies at the same time (though only one gets priority of the video so the quality after the first is diminished)

Plus if you d/l crap, it tends to work with most without having to bother with codecs where WMP will fail.

A negative is the lack of support for EDL (I have an app that passes the MPEG file and creates commercial breaks in EDL format. I only wish it would see and use that to automatically jump to after the break).

Anyways, between WMP (20% of my life) and VLC (remainder) there is no other app required IMO for watching.

However I will add this - I currently use 0.9.9. For some reason the more up to date ones (have tried a few) don't have that polished feel that 0.9.9 does - number of issues which I care not to get into but each time I have tried updates I have come back to this one. It is SOLID and nothing in the new one has compelled me to move forward.

I still use Winamp to play music. Love their docked toolbar at the top that disappears. But VLC plays that too.

For whatever reason, I have never liked WMP's version of what compact is. WMP is great for a quick rip and cover but otherwise I rarely use it. Wife does because it presents music in a sort of iPOD way unlike Winamp. But as we know, "Winamp kicks the llama's ass" and that is why I use it.

B

Breccia, thanks! I installed Videolan but still have the problem that the DVD is not recognized by the computer. I ordered a CD/DVD cleaner and will try that next. Playing DVDs is a low priority for me, so I may just forget about it if cleaning doesn't help.
