(NASDAQ: AAPL) will release a smaller, cheaper version of its popular smartphone this summer alongside the release of the iPhone 5, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal on Monday citing people familiar with the matter. The source said that the device would be about half the size of the existing iPhone, and will be available at carriers at roughly half the price of the iPhone 4. The lower price of the smaller device will allow wireless carriers to subsidize the full price of the smartphone from Apple. Currently, customers are paying roughly $200 for the cheapest version of the iPhone 4 when signing a two-year contract. The Cupertino, California-based company is also looking to revamp its MobileMe online storage service, according to the report. MobileMe allows users to sync data stored in a central location across various devices and computers. The service currently carries an annual subscription fee of $99. Apple is considering making MobileMe a free service that would allow users to store content in a cloud, eliminating the need for devices with large storage capacities. The sources cited by the Journal said that the smaller iPhone and revamped MobileMe service are scheduled for release this summer, according to the report.
