I agree with your desire to see a smaller government as well - but I doubt that can be achieved by a major switch in tax structure or even a flat tax on income. It needs to start with limits on spending - aka a balanced budget amendment that can pass constitutional muster and all States should adopt one as well.

The other trouble I see with a consumption tax is that it would have to be, under current revenue targets, extremely high like well over 30% on purchases. So while the idea seems good - I don't think the figure ever gets realistically discussed.

In the end I want government to be a partner of business not a devil on your shoulder suggesting you buy buy buy - it's patriotic!

Revenue on American income is better than revenue from Chinese products - now that's patriotic! :-)
