Vinod Dham, Architect of AMD's K6 decides to go elsewhere

The architect of Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s widely praised K6 processor, Vinod Dham, abruptly
resigned from the company to pursue outside interests. As group vice president of the Computation
Products Group, Dham was given much of the credit for AMD's ability to deliver a processor
capable of competing with Intel Corp.'s Pentium II processor line. But AMD officials insisted his
departure wouldn't hurt the company's efforts to deliver portable versions of the chip or more
powerful follow-on products. Dham came to AMD along with Nexgen Inc. when that chip design
company was acquired in 1995; previously he was with Intel Corp. for 16 years. Dham's
achievement with the K6 has been marred somewhat by AMD's trouble manufacturing the chip in
volume quantities. From SJ Mercury News
