That's pretty sad.
The mindset is a fairy tale unsupported by facts.

Self-employed building contractors do lie about this all the time. Its very common to have high expenses and low income - particularly in divorce and child support cases.

As an example case - My wife's ex-husband sued her to reduce his child-support exposure. Total cost was probably $10k each in legal fee's.

His documentation said he was broke earning only 32k with an IRS debt of over 120k. No assets. His income the year before the divorce was over 200k.

Legally child support is based on income here - so he wins, but dragged the legal stuff out until she agreed to give up his arrears (about 60k in underpaid child support and unpaid alimony).

Never asked - how could he afford 10k in legal fees to reduce his child support and erase his arrears?

Happens all the time - your friend who was a small business owner just got lumped in with the deadbeat crowd.

btw - the deadbeat ex subsequently launched a new business, bought trucks, hired crews and has been on extensive vacations.

But does not help his college age daughters and pays almost nothing on his youngest, but is very big on his 'right' to see her.
