I'm impressed. I wasn't impressed with PING.

I've followed Apple a long time, I think I understand their mentality.

They saw Facebook. They put out PING just to get a feel for it. Then they thought through their entire strategy. Jobs hates the carriers. Facebook doesn't have an integrated hardware platform so Apple can leverage that to an advantage over them. In addition Apple can monitize it both from a hardware (Market Share) and software side with iAds.

This sounds like their answer. And it's a Cloud answer, and they have a giant brand new Data Center.

KEY sentence:

“The concept is that you would have you own website that’s dynamic, all based on what you are doing at that moment,” said our source. “Apple thinks of it as having a webserver in your pocket… everything will be dynamically updated to MobileMe.”

Data uploads are passive. No need to constantly type or upload. Dynamic ads based on constant real time data. Sounds annoying but think of it this way, there may be an ad on your phone because you are near a business you are known to frequent, but as you move away from it Apple deletes the ad and replaces it with a new ad more appropriate to your location. Jobs hates intrusive ads. These ads would be much less intrusive because they would be extremely targeted.

I think this coupled with a cheaper phone and cheaper data plans will strongly appeal to teenagers and young adults. Strongly is possibly an understatement.
