Ultimately, one huge advantage of high speed rail is that it will run on electricity. Still... if gov't bureaucrats are involved anywhere but the fringes, or political favors are handed out, etc. (almost an absolute certainty), it will be effed up and far too inefficient for what it could have been, should have been.

If all the costs of automobile culture were apportioned correctly, including subsidies like defending oil supplies around the world, rail might look a little more economic.
