Tire decisions.

BTW, I decided on the Hankook Optimo H727 tires for my wife's 2005 Equinox in the fall of 2011. Overall impressions, they are a decent long-life summer tire. Can be noisy on some roads. Harsh when pushed in aggressive driving around town. Not terrible tires for winter, but I would like to get a separate set of rims and tires for her vehicle next winter. I think the vehicle rides fairly harsh overall on all the tires it has worn so far (now on the 3rd set of tires).

Was looking at both winter tires and summer tires for my car next year (2007 Mk4 VW Jetta). I have 2 sets of wheels for summer and winter, both in size 195/65R15. Lots of choice in this size. The OEM tires were Michelin Energy MXV4 S8, not too bad for an OEM tire and lasted 6 summers with UTQG treadwear rating 440 but the tread is worn and the sidewalls are starting to crack due to their age.

I have been very happy with the Nokian Hakkapellitta RSi for winter and they still work better than most all-season tires but after this 6th season they will be due for replacement. Although Nokian is still considered the best winter tire they have gotten more expensive in the last few years and are not the deal they used to be. Next winter I am probably looking towards the General AltiMAX Arctic which I had recommended to my sister when they were on sale at Canadian Tire ($105 per tire).

The following winter tire ratings pretty much summarize what I have read elsewhere:

Summer tire choices, I figured the General Tire AltiMAX HP would suit my car well. Good reviews at Tire Rack, H-speed rated, and decent compromise between sportiness and long wearing. If I wanted to spend a bit more (or found a good deal) I would probably lean towards the Michelin Primacy MXV4 as another choice.
