Charles,

They play on the psychology of the market. It shot up this AM on the expectation of a PR. When none was forthcoming early, they likely anticipated the slowdown and that they could buy back in the afternoon at a lower price if no PR until late today or tomorrow. Making 1/4 or 1/2 point on a day isn't too bad. Of course, they're not covering past shorts, just daily trading shorts, IMO.
