Best to buy a laser printer the toner in them lasts forever and the printer cost is not that much more than an inkjet.

Good to know the facts first before buying one though. Higher end printers come with "toner+drum" in one unit. But cheaper ones have them split. I have a Panasonic laser that has been solid and does duplex - over 4y old. The toner lasts about 5.000 sheets and the drum is expected to last 20,000. I have replaced the toner once I believe. Was ~$100-$125.

If you stick with a rather popular brand (ie HP) then you shouldn't ever have problems getting toner - so be careful with non-popular brand.

Strictly speaking about SOHO models. When you are talking high end lasers - toner should never be a problem to buy.

My next has to have duplex and assume color.

Depends on how much printing one actually does on a monthly basis. IMO, a laser printer would be more than needed for the average small home user. I have an HP 4 in 1 ink jet that has served my multi needs very well. I have been getting black ink cartridge refills at Costco for $6.99 for the past year. Solid color cartridges are $5.99. They are excellent quality, normally refill in less than an hour while you shop, and last as long as the originals (maybe even longer.
