You may already know but I do it anyway. You can buy any cheap GPS receiver (Bluetooth, laptop dongle, etc) from Ebay or Amazon. Then connect it to your laptop, there you instantly have a laptop computer GPS with download maps (you may have to download map software) in your hard drive in case you need it (safety purpose)

I used my Android (with GPS receiver built in) phone with world maps (downloaded) built in my phone's flash memory. I used it as a golf range finder, a GPS on road or off road (hiking, etc) without using celluar function at all. There are many other GPS applications one can explore.
