I don't know about most of the countries, but from what I saw in Singapore and Hong Kong markets (and to some extent in Indonesia), the traders were really "gamblers", and they viewed a day at the stock market the same as a day at the track or casino. The odds were always stacked in favor of the house -- i.e., the hedge funds who could move these relatively thinly capitalized markets at will.
