at my kid's school they had to read 4-6 books during summer and take tests about them. They also had to do some math

Yes the management comes via parents not school....

In India as a kid we usually had April-May as summer vacation.

Once I was old enuff - ie > 10 yrs old,my dad got me working at the neighborhood garage, for no money during vacation time ...It was a way to educate me & keep me out of mischief...

(Even today,(at the ageof 50+) I am amazed at people in my neighborhood who do not know how to change a flat tyre in their car or change a radiator fan belt. Then there are guys who have ignition problems, and don't know that the spark plugs can be cleaned in a few minutes, and how to clean them...)

Go figure- education in schools only ?
