You might ask: What chip-production technology do you consider to be the best contender for sub-.18 production, and when do you think this could be a threat to Cymer? Betty, I asked Akins almost the very same question. His answer (paraphrase) -- DUV litho is capable down to 0.1 micron (by year 2006) and even possibly 0.07 micron using ArF laser. Soft x-ray XRL will succeed DUV litho, but probably not before year 2009. Cymer and others are working on XRL, but Cymer is using an unique, non laser, approach to generating the soft x rays which involves the rapid discharge of a stored electrical charge. Tulvio
