BusinessWire, Thursday, November 13, 1997 at 10:38

DULLES, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1997--

More AOL Members Across the Country Able to Connect at Higher Speeds

AOL Networks, the Internet online service division of America
Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL), Thursday announced that it has successfully
completed the field trial with 3Com Corp.'s (NASDAQ:COMS) x2 T
technology.(a)
Completion of this trial makes it possible for AOL members to
access the service at high speeds in 410 cities throughout the
country.
In June, AOL announced the broad deployment of the field trial
with 3Com, and assured members that they would upgrade 200 cities to
x2 technology by the end of September. AOL has successfully
completed this effort and has expanded the capability of access
speeds up to 56K to 210 more cities, making it possible to access the
x2 technology in a current total of 410 cities.
AOL offers the fastest communication in cyberspace, available to
customers operating on regular analog dial-up phone service.
"We are excited to be able to offer this successful cutting edge
technology to our members. The broad deployment of x2 in cities
throughout the country gives AOL members the opportunity to access
the service from more locations, at speeds up to twice as fast as the
previous generation of modems," said Matt Korn, AOL Networks senior
vice president for Network Operations. "Our relationship with 3Com
has contributed to AOL's ability to deliver the 'next generation'
technology to our members to enhance their online experience. As we
forge ahead at new speeds, we are enthusiastic about the
possibilities that these new modems promise."
"3Com's collaboration with AOL in bringing higher speed
technology to the AOL service has been a tremendous achievement over
the past several months. We are succeeding beyond our expectations,
and are continuing to move forward by introducing innovative
technologies to AOL customers," said Ross Manire, senior vice
president of 3Com's Carrier Systems Business Unit.
The deployment of the x2 technology in AOLnet, the world's
largest dial-up network, continues to be available at no extra cost
to AOL members with 3Com modems capable of supporting x2 technology.
Members can go to Keyword: x2 for details about AOL and 3Com's
efforts and to find a complete listing of current cities which x2 has
been extended.
AOL and its international joint venture partners are also
conducting field trials of x2 technology internationally.
