Unless memory fails me, that was the case even in Vietnam. There are numerous good honorable reasons why a pilot might opt to forfeit his flying status; and during combat, would anyone want to be the GIB for a front-seat pilot who did not want to fly -- for whatever reason? Not likely.

I would imagine the same might be true for Airborne troops as well?
