Government news agency Agencia Brasil also reported that Obama was likely to go on to Rio de Janeiro on March 20. The Brazil visit is part of a Latin America tour Obama announced last month in his State of the Union address in which he said he wanted to "forge new alliances" in the Americas. The other countries he said he would visit in March -- without giving precise dates -- were El Salvador and Chile. The US embassy in Brasilia did not confirm the information given by Rousseff's spokesman that Obama would visit March 19. According to the Sunday edition of the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, there was talk of Obama being accompanied by his wife Michelle and their two daughters. "We are working on that hypothesis. For us, it would be an honor that he consider Brazil a good country to bring his family," a foreign ministry spokesman, Tovar Nunes, told the daily. The newspaper said Obama was hoping to deliver a historic speech in Rio. US officials had been scouting five slums in the city for a possible venue, a source in Rio's public security secretariat told AFP. The city, one of the most violent in Brazil, won the right to host the 2016 Olympic Games over competition from several cities, including Obama's home town of Chicago.
