Nobody pushed me to read, my parents had not time, both working hard including my mom; who was a pharmacist.
Taught myself, what's the big deal?
My big son taught himself to read katakana Japanese around age 6, he needed that to play the Nintendo games at my in-laws place time of the kids visiting their 2nd home in Japan during the summer school vacs.

What's the big beef about this whole thing? Kids who really want to learn take care of much of that procedure just fine by themselves.

Those overly paid teachers could indeed learn a lot themself in that same process.
