If that is true how come I never come across any gringos that can speak Spanish at all fluently? There are plenty that have tried and given it up frustrated.

English is certainly a challenging (as well as boring) language.

Actually I just remembered a Latin teacher I once had that also taught Spanish. He often said that beginning Spanish grammar was very easy but that the advanced grammar was extremely difficult. And the native speakers do use that advanced grammar all the time.
