Has Macromedia helped Adobe with anything significant that's worth 3.4 bill? I don't know.

Yes because they were losing the battle to Adobe. Flash has always had a problematic interface. They changed it completely once then change it BACK!!! I'm not sure Freehand was inferior to Illustrator but Adobe wisely tried to make interfaces across it's software similar so the learning curve would be easier. That effectively killed Freehands chances. Dreamweaver got the jump on Golive but Macromedia could see the handwriting on the wall. FinalCut was losing to Premire/After Effects until Apple bought it.
