Paul B. Farrell used to be such a buy and hold investor. He wrote a book about how to keep it simple, they sent me a pre publication copy to review in 2003 and I recommended it to many as a good place to start for making core portfolios. Like many, he was bullish at the top in 2000 and now after 11 years of tough going, has all sorts of reasons to not like equities.
