A colleague I knew in Alaska said he always fed a few clams to his cats before eating them himself. He claimed if the cats didn't die they were safe for him. It's a real issue. There's a place called "Poison Cove" named for an incident when 150 Aleuts returning from Russian slavery in Sitka died after eating clams with Paralytic Shellfish Poison toxins.
