David, >>Their strategy here is the critical factor, and my view is that the jury is still very much out on this topic.<< I agree with you completely. In my opinion Borland is in a position where they need to take advantage of the technology acquired when they purchased Open Environment. This technology competes in the low end of Fortes market space (ie distributed object technology). If Borland is successful, it will be due to the people acquired in this acquisition; Borland has, IMHO nobody who understands enterprise computing and the attendant needs of these kind of customers, other then Open Env. Borland bought Open Env., so why not try to get something out of it. I will become worried when they bet the farm on it. In the short term, I have very few doubts about Borland executing its continued recovery based on the retail developers tools market. In the long term (1 -2 yrs) who knows? In their enterprise product we are talking about a product that uses Delphi (which I love). I am not sure that others will love it as well. If/when Java takes off who knows how well they may do in this space? With regard to Del Yokum's statement: "We're out to take share from them, and we'll do it with a solution that's open, easier to use, and offers higher productivity and higher performance." If I am the person shooting a cannon across somebody's bow, I would select a company that is fighting for its survival. An arrogant company that is losing money, who has arrogant salesman who tell you how stupid you are for not understanding how great they are. This might be an overstatement but, Forte would only do themselves harm by recognizing Borland as a competitor. In short, I agree with you. Who knows if Borland will be successful in this domain? The acquisition of Open Env has set them on this course. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Tom ps: I follow the Forte thread and I enjoy your devils advocate position. We will see David R debating skills should he post on that thread.
