He could install a new HD where the C: used to be and restore Windows to it, then install the old C: as the second drive and rescue his files from it. After that the old C: could become the backup drive.

Or, have the computer shop do it.

PS: if the HD is serial, there is no master/slave as far as I know. My 5 year old Compaq is serial, so his may be too, unless it's much older.
