I was unaware until I added a second HD last year and found it had to be plugged into the motherboard the same as the first HD.

I've seen quite a few fail, from my experience they're no more or less reliable than IDE hard drives. The only difference is the interface.

I just built a nice box for a friend with twin terabyte hard drives setup with RAID 0, greatly reduces the need for backups the odds of both drives failing is very remote but RAID doesn't prevent theft or fire.
