Motorola Working on 7-inch Tablet to Compliment XOOM

Among the many other tidbits Sanjay Jha dropped during today’s talk with Stanley Morgan investors was the revelation that Motorola is already working on a 7-inch Android tablet for release by the end of the year. The company just released their first tablet, the Motorola XOOM, during the final week of February, but Jha sees exploring various size options as beneficial.

That seems to be thinking on most manufacturers’ minds, with the likes of Samsung, Acer, and Viewsonic all offering tablets ranging in size. In the end, it is merely a matter of inches. Something tells me the time spent developing a product with the only selling point being its size could be better used elsewhere.

There are some that would prefer a 7" tablet but I believe for it would be a small minority. That size impairs leisure content viewing and productivity applications. I can use my iPad for viewing/entering medical records, radiology images I wouldn't want to do that on a 7" tablet. Most other enterprise applications are the same I believe. Same with educational use. Same with leisure/entertainment use. A very light 9 - 10" tablet is best for 90% of uses IMO. There is a reason a sheet of paper evolved to a certain size. If Android tablets are equivalent weight to the iPad 2 then no advantage gained. I'm betting weight reduction has been a significant focus of Apple, iPad 2 weight will be surprising low in weight, and Android OEMs will be left to scramble once again catch up to Apple.
