Chinese railway official fired amid graft probe

BEIJING (AP) — A top engineer in China's powerful Railway Ministry has been fired post amid a widening corruption probe that has already brought down the minister, state media reported Tuesday.

Former deputy chief engineer Zhang Shuguang was placed under investigation for allegedly committing a "severe violation of discipline," the Xinhua News Agency said, using standard terminology for involvement in graft.

Zhang also lost his job as director of the ministry's transportation department, Xinhua said. It said Zhang's case has been handed to the ruling Communist Party's Office of Discipline and Inspection — a step that usually comes before cases are handed over to prosecutors.

The move follows the removal last month of long-serving Railway Minister Liu Zhijun after he was investigated for corruption in one of the highest-reaching graft probes in years.

China's leaders acknowledge the threat endemic corruption poses to the party's credibility, and the government says more than 146,000 officials were punished for corruption last year.

The Railway Ministry is especially sensitive because of its vital importance in a vast country and the massive investments being made in a countrywide network of high-speed rail lines.

The rapid expansion of that network has raised questions about quality and safety, along with complaints about high ticket prices.

No details have been released about the allegations against Liu, who took over as minister in 2003.

Hong Kong media have said that Liu's brother is Liu Zhixiang, a former Railway Ministry official brought down by corruption and handed a suspended death sentence.
