What you say is absolutely correct for bio-fuel made from corn. Using any food source to make bio-fuel is stupid. Instead, non-food sources should be used, but I am sure the corn lobby in this country would do everything to kill that!

Lower energy density is long known... Here are the numbers

Gasoline (petrol) 34.2
Gasohol E10 (10% ethanol 90% gasoline by volume) 33.18
Biodiesel oil (vegetable oil) 33

The 3% just on energy density adds up.
