Motive unclear in killing of two US airmen at Frankfurt airport

Isabelle De Pommereau – Wed Mar 2, 2011

Frankfurt – German authorities charged a Kosovar man for today's killing of two US airmen at the Frankfurt airport, a major transit point for American forces in Europe.

A police spokesperson said it was too early to determine if the attack was politically motivated or a planned act of terrorism. It has been reported that the shooter, identified as a Muslim in his early 20s, shouted "Allah Akbar" ("God is greatest") before opening fire.

The gunman apparently approached the bus full of airmen around 3 p.m. local time and shot and killed a soldier standing in front of the vehicle before killing the bus driver and wounding two other passengers, said Boris Rhein, Interior minister for the state of Hesse.

"I am consciously speaking of homicide and not an attack," Mr. Rhein said at the scene. "But at the moment, nothing can be ruled out."

The airmen are based in the UK at the Lakenheath Airfield in Eastern England, which is home to the only F-15 fighter wing in Europe. It employs 4,500 active-duty military members. They had just arrived In Germany and were on their way to a base when the attack happened.

Germany: Gunman Shouts 'Allahu Akbar,' Kills 2 US Airmen

In an apparent Muslim terrorist attack, a gunman opened fire on a U.S. Air Force bus outside Frankfurt airport Wednesday, killing two airmen and wounding two others. A source told Fox News that the shooter yelled "Allahu Akbar" - the Muslim battle cry - as he began firing.

Kosovo's interior minister told The Associated Press that German police have identified the suspect as Arif Uka, a citizen of Kosovo from the northern town of Mitrovica.

The bus was idling outside Terminal 2 at the airport, according to Frankfurt police spokesman Manfred Fuellhardt. The bus driver and a passenger were killed. One person suffered serious wounds and another light injuries, according to Fuellhardt. Uka then dropped his gun and ran into the terminal where he was subdued.

Fox News quoted U.S. Air Force Europe spokeswoman Maj. Beverly Mock as saying all four victims were airmen based at the Lakenheath military base in Britain. A military official in Europe said they were going to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

A website named Pundit Press published a post in which it speculated that this is the attacker's Facebook page, although it admitted it does not have proof that this is the case and apologized in case it turns out to be wrong.

President Barack Obama said he was "saddened and outraged" by the shooting and vowed that the U.S. will spare no effort in finding out how the "outrageous" act came to pass.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the shooting "a terrible event."

A member of the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Patrick Meehan, said in Washington that the attack looked like a terrorist act. He added that he did not have all the facts about the shooting yet.

In 2007, German police thwarted a plot by members of the extremist Islamic Jihad Union to attack U.S. facilities.

Frankfurt Airport shooting: Two US servicemen dead

NOTICE HOW the BBC OMITS` any use of the word "muslim" and the fact the killer yelled allah akbar

BBC's Stephen Evans says the gunman had been involved in an altercation before he started shooting

Two US Air Force servicemen have died after a gunman opened fire on a bus carrying American military personnel at Frankfurt Airport, police say.

Two servicemen were also wounded. One of the dead is said to have been the driver. All four were based at RAF Lakenheath in eastern England.

A 21-year-old man from Kosovo was arrested at Terminal 2 close to where the attack took place.

US President Barack Obama condemned it as an "outrageous act".

He said the US would spare no effort in investigating the shootings to "ensure that all the perpetrators are brought to justice".

"I think the American people are united in expressing our gratitude for the service of those who were lost," Mr Obama said.

'Just arrived'

The men had just flown in from Britain and were about to travel to the US military base at Ramstein, a hub for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We will spare no effort in learning how this outrageous act took place"

"Two airmen have been killed and two were wounded during a shooting incident today at Frankfurt International Airport," the US Air Forces in Europe said in a statement.

"The names of the deceased are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin. German authorities have the shooter in custody. The incident is currently under investigation," the statement added.

The bus driver and a passenger were killed, while one airman suffered minor injuries and the second was in a life-threatening condition, according to Frankfurt police spokesman Manfred Fuellhardt.

Mr Fuellhardt said the attacker and US military personnel apparently had an altercation in front of the bus just before the man started shooting. The attacker briefly entered the bus, he added.

The BBC's Stephen Evans in Berlin says that after the shooting, which took place in the middle of the afternoon, the suspected gunman fled into the terminal building, where he was arrested by German police.
