I not sure you are right about this. The first time I bought stock it was in a small company called Universal financial(UHCO). I didn't know nasdaq rules and I thought I could sell within the spread. Well when I bought my 500 shares I looked at the volume for the day and it said 500!! Yes I was the only person to buy the stock the whole day! So volume represents the total shares that changed hands.
