I am amazed that he gave you silver dollars. They not only have the intrinsic value of the silver, they have numismatic value.

The one ounce coins cost the price of silver plus "spot." Right now, one Silver Eagle would cost you $39.89.

I think you should be sure to check what year yours were printed, you may have some very valuable coins.
